An LED is a light-emitting diode. Until recent years, consumers had been using incandescent light bulbs in their homes and businesses.

In today's energy conscious society, these lights are known to be inefficient because most of their energy is wasted as heat, have shorter life spans, and can be environmentally harmful as most bulbs contain mercury. Due to federal energy-efficiency standards, incandescent bulbs are gradually phasing-out of production -- that's where LEDs come into play. LEDs offer significant energy savings, and can last up to 100,000 hours.

While we reap the financial benefits, the environment also gains from the transition by way of its reduced greenhouse gas emissions, absence of mercury, and because they are derived from recycled materials. LEDs make excellent light sources both indoors and out thanks to their durability and ability to withhold their superior performance in frigid temperatures.
